Kepi Ghoulie on art, caffeine and ‘Kidstarters’

The ever-prolific Kepi Ghoulie made a slew of records with his old band the Groovie Ghoulies, but since he began releasing solo records via Asian Man Records in 2008, that output has nearly doubled. It’s equally impressive when you consider Kepi’s DIY approach to recording and releasing. His next album will be for Fun Fun Records, the new label devoted to kids’ music from Mike Park of Asian Man. To fund the recording, Kepi offered what he called “Kidstarter,” wherein for $222, he would paint you a custom cover to any album he has ever released. This neatly ties the man’s two art forms — music and painting — into one neat package (as does the in-the-works Kepi art book from Stardumb Records). Kepi was kind enough to fit an e-mail interview into his amazingly busy life. How busy? He’s coming through the area with Kevin Seconds not once, but twice, in the coming weeks. They play this Friday night, March 16, at the Replay, and swing back through two weeks later for a matinee at RecordBar with Franz Nicolay on Friday, March 30.
