KCFW Q&A: Missy Isamoore
Missy IsaMoore’s designs are audacious and colorful. She’s a Kansas City native, but has lived in Houston and Chicago. IsaMoore began designing clothes in high school — she made her own prom dress junior year — and started her clothing line, Sew UnRelaxed, in 2003. Using prints and textures inspired by Ankara, Sew UnRelaxed marries urban style with African flair. We caught up with IsaMoore to talk about her process and what to expect from her F/W ‘19 collection.
You describe your brand as Afro-politan, a mix between Afrocentric and cosmopolitan. What does that mean to you?
Afro-politan to Sew UnRelaxed describes the collision of African prints, Ankara fabrics, and wax prints in comfortable, formal, and ready-to-wear attire. My goal in fashion is making comfortable, formal, and ready-to-wear attire while making a statement. I love mixing and matching bright colors and prints of Ankara into my staple garments, or even a custom garment.
Your designs stand out because of their bold silhouettes and patterns. What do you want the people who wear your brand to feel?
People who wear my brand know they’re getting a quality garment with impeccable fit, designed with them in mind. And since my clients feel empowered, comfortable, and confident while wearing my garments, I know I have done a great job, and that is my ultimate goal.
Who are your current muses?
Janelle Monae for her boldness and style. Serena Williams because she makes a point to show her personality and strength through her style, both on and off the court. In short, I’m inspired by trendsetters who are not afraid to be different. I also draw inspiration from vintage icons like Josephine Baker, Diahann Carroll, and Diana Ross. I’m also inspired by the fashion depicted on old TV shows like Dallas and Designing Women.
Does Kansas City influence the way you create?
Absolutely! Kansas City provides a sustainable ecosystem where I can observe trends happening on each coast, and abroad, while still being able to produce my own style and flair. Also, I have been able to find and curate a community with other creatives here, which I am so thankful for.
Kansas City is mid-sized and in the Midwest, so it’s almost an anomaly to be a designer here. Despite those facts, I have had the opportunity to showcase my brand and creativity all over my city, and as a result, people recognize Sew UnRelaxed as the unique brand I am cultivating it to be. Many people have said I should move to a bigger city in order to be a fashion designer or launch a fashion line, and I disagree. I love my city!
What can we expect from you at KCFW?
The. Fashion. I’m spreading my wings this season with my line and introducing menswear. Expect an amalgamation of prints, textures, and colors with styles to fit every aspect of the day — from work and play to “after five.” I will be showing coupled looks, alongside separates and ready-to-wear. This Sew UnRelaxed line will consist of formal and casual wear combined elegantly, and I am so proud to share it with the world!
