Something New

Sail Away Wine: North KC’s Sail Away Wine has brought back the fan-favorite event: Sommelier Showdown. For $15, participants can partake in a blind wine tasting and have three minutes to complete a wine profile questionnaire, trying their hand at sommelier skills. The most accurate winners will advance to the next round, similar to a tournament bracket. All money raised will go to Hope House, a domestic violence shelter in Kansas City. 

BRGR Kitchen + Bar: Do you have an iconic burger idea that you’re willing to share? BRGR has opened up the 2024 Burger Battle. You’ll earn $10 in BRGR rewards just for submitting your recipe online, and the winner gets to see their burger on the menu. Finalists will be announced February 16. 

Shatto Milk Company: Shatto is celebrating the Chiefs winning their division the best way they know how: by releasing a limited-edition Chocolate Cherry Milk. The bottle features yellow CHAMPS lettering and is now available in all stores carrying Shatto Milk and at the farm store in Osborn, MO. 

Local Cookbook: Ready to level up your home-cooked meals? Simply Niko: Restaurant Recipes At Home by Niko Tsamolias is available on Amazon now. Niko is the Owner and Chef at Pete’s Steakhouse in Atchison. The Simply Niko cookbook divulges restaurant secrets for home chefs to elevate their meals. 

Opening

Vita’s Place: A new wine-centered bistro Is now open in the Crestwood Shops area of Brookside. Vita’s Place is from the team behind Underdog Wines, so diners can expect a well-curated selection of wines as well as cocktails and small plates. Reservations are now available for Wednesday through Sunday evenings.

January 13

Providence By The Slice: Westport’s Providence by the Slice is featuring a different kind of dough-based goody from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. They’re hosting a Luca Bagel pop-up, offering fresh bagels and schmear. Preorders are available now via orders@lucabagel.com

The Pairing: The Pairing in Crossroads is always open for non-drinkers or the sober-curious, but from 3 – 6 p.m. n/a options take center stage. Three different brands taking over the wine ba throughout the afternoon: Leitz & Eins-Zwei-Zero, Athletic Brewing Co, and BARE Zero Proof Spirits. Pop in or make a reservation to enjoy samples, drinks by the glass, and bottles for purchase.

Restless Spirits Distilling Co.: North KC’s Restless Spirits is hosting pop-up bartenders Le Vide for a special night of craft cocktails. No reservations are required, and Restless Spirits is open from 2 – 9 p.m.

ReRoll Tavern: In North KC, ReRoll is throwing a super soft Letterkenny Party from 7 – 10 p.m. Tickets start at $5 and include a Skid-sponsored dance-off, costume contest, access to themed drinks, a chirping contest, and trivia. 

McFadden’s: McFadden’s in the Power and Light area is keeping things comfy. They’re hosting a Pajama Slumber Party starting at 8 p.m. complete with prizes, music, and drink specials. With cold weather predicted for the weekend, this is a fabulous excuse to stay cozy in sweatsuits and fuzzy boots while still getting out of the house. 

January 14

The Prospect KC: To celebrate its fourth anniversary, The Prospect KC invites you to a special brunch between 10 a.m. – 3 p.m in the Historic 18th and Vine District. The menu features an eggs benedict bar, Nutter Butter french toast, house-made chicken sausage, and much more. Tickets are required.

Plan Ahead

Tom’s Town Distilling Co.: Tom’s Town is throwing a party on January 17 to celebrate the release of Machine #9 Missouri Straight Applejack. This spirit started as KC Wineworks’ Äpfel Cider and after over 3 ½ years of distilling and aging at Tom’s Town, is now ready for tasting! The $56 ticketed event includes one bottle of The Machine #9, a welcome cocktail, tastings, and light bites.

Taps on Main: Grab your book and head to Taps on Main in downtown KC. The free and open local chapter of Silent Book Club is meeting there on January 17 at 6:30 p.m.
