KC Sipps: Sauced & Lost, anniversary celebrations, and a throwback night at Kelly’s
This week's Kansas City restaurant news.
Looking for delicious plans? Whether you want to impress a date, show your fam the best of KC, or just get out of the house, we’ve got you covered… all while supporting (mostly) local.
Here is your weekly roundup of the best food and drink offerings around Kansas City. Cheers!
Something New
Hey! Hey! Club: Happy five years, Hey! Hey! Club! The speakeasy-style bar and restaurant at J. Rieger & Co.Distilling is celebrating all month, but the week of September 16-22 is a great time to visit. As part of The Pitch’s Dessert Week, Hey! Hey! Club is offering half-off their entire dessert menu, plus, Negroni Week will happen at the same time.
Corvino: Downtown KC’s Corvino restaurant has transformed into a performance venue for two weeks only. Reservations are available for the musical Chicago-themed show during dinner service. $20 tickets reserve your spot and support the performers, then dinner, drinks, and dessert is available for additional purchase. Hot tip: the house fries and Chinese broccoli sides are some of my favorites in the city.
Opening
Chosun BBQ: After completing a remodel, Chosun BBQ (#2) is open again at 12611 Metcalf Ave in Overland Park. Chosun offers delivery and carryout, Korean BBQ, hot pot, and more.
Los Guapos: From the owners of (formerly) Cielito Lindo and Lulu’s Latin Food now comes Los Guapos. The new Latin restaurant is located at 1500 W. Sixth St. in Lawrence and features a menu of tacos, tortas, and other dishes from eight different countries.
September 13
Hemma Hemma: It’s ladies’ night out in Waldo, with Hemma Hemma and Sierra Winter Jewelry. The evening, from 5 – 8 p.m., features Sierra Winter’s jewelry and other vendors, food and drink, and a welcoming atmosphere. $30 tickets in advance include two signature drinks and a grazing table.
Red Kitchen Cien Por Ciento Mexicana: Spend your Friday evening learning the art of authentic pork tamales with Red Kitchen’s founder Alejandra de la Fuente. This class is at the Overland Park restaurant, and starts at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $95 and include a meal to kick off the evening, hands-on instruction, an exclusive recipe packet, and six tamales to take home.
Reggae Music and Jerk Festival: For the next three days, Berkley Riverfront will be even cooler. The Kansas City Reggae and Jerk Festival features live music, vendors, Caribbean food, a cannavillage, activities, and giveaways. Tickets start at $20 and it looks like it will be a beautiful weekend to be outside.
KC Fiesta Hispana: Fiesta Hispana is a free, all-ages festival that will take over the American Royal lots in West Bottoms from Friday through Sunday. The weekend festival features music performances, vendors and food, and activities for all ages.
Green Dirt on Oak: To celebrate Friday the 13th, Green Dirt on Oak is hosting a Freaky Tiki concert. From 7 – 10 p.m., SunDog surf band will rock the rooftop while Green Dirt serves tiki-inspired cocktails and more. Tickets, providing access to the rooftop show, are $25.
September 14
SipSteady: SipSteady–a sober and sober-curious organization–is throwing a party to celebrate two years of serving KC and beyond. The party will be from 8 – 11 p.m. at Big Mood Natural Wines in Crossroads. Stop by for non-alcoholic wines, (regular wines available as well), cake, music, and more. Hot tip: the first ten guests will receive a non-alcoholic and hemp prize pack!
September 15
Pitchside Coffee: From 9 a.m. to sell out, KC Current player-owned Pitchside Coffee will pop up at Muni in River Market. Muni will be serving breakfast foods while Pitchside serves coffee and caffeinated drinks. As if a cool Saturday in River Market needed more good vibes?!
Kelly’s Westport Inn: Kelly’s is here to convince you that a night out in Westport is not just for the youngsters. From 6 – 10 p.m., enjoy free entry and drink specials designed for a throwback experience specifically for partiers over 30 years old. Think: early 2000s songs, vodka with Crystal Lite and Smirnoff Ice for $4, $6 Jägerbombs, etc. “Good luck with the three-day hangover,” says Kelly’s. The truth hurts.
September 16
Cliff’s Taphouse: Cliff’s in Martini Corner is opening an extra day next week for a fan-favorite event–the Vegan Wine Dinner. The five-course menu with wine pairings features dishes like an autumn harvest salad, pumpkin and chorizo bisque, tiramisu, and more. Tickets are $70, and the dinner starts at 6 p.m.
Plan Ahead
Bon Bon: On September 17, enjoy an intimate chef’s dinner at one of Lawrence’s top spots: Bon Bon. This is the next installment of Just Food’s Fond Dinner Series, where guests will learn from the sentimental and culinary journey of Simon Bates, Bon Bon’s Chef. Tickets are $300 for two guests and include a four-course meal with drink pairings that all support Just Food.
Scratch Gourmet Kitchen: Two local stars, Scratch and J. Rieger & Co., are partnering for a special event on September 18. Reservations are available for the six-course J. Rieger Whiskey Dinner, where each dish is thoughtfully paired with a selection of J. Rieger & Co. spirits. The menu is rustic and interesting, with dishes like duck confit gnocchi and almond coffee cake catching my eye. Tickets are $120.
Liberty Corn Maze: For one night only, the Liberty Corn Maze is kicking the kids out and letting adults get “Sauced and Lost.” The Sauced and Lost event starts at 8:30 p.m. on September 20. Tickets are $40, which include access to the maze, complete with checkpoints with beer or wine tastings, and one full pour if when you make it through.
Just Food: Douglas County’s Just Food non-profit is hosting Stocktoberfest on September 22. This fundraising event is a casual and fun way to help address food insecurity in Lawrence and beyond. The event features local craft beers, food, live music, and family-friendly activities. Adult tickets start at $55, and include a tasting glass for six pours of local beers.
