KC Sipps: New Mediterranean spot closes, National Pickle Day, and free sandwiches in Mission
This week's Kansas City restaurant news.
Life in KC is pretty delicious. In fact, there is often so much going on that it can be hard to decide where to go and what to try.
That’s where I come in.
I’ve curated this weekly list of events, openings, deals, and celebrations to keep you in-the-know. Cheers!
Something New
News Bites: The Pitch Nacho & Taco Week is here! That means half-price nacho and taco dishes at a few of KC’s favorite restaurants. A range of eateries chose to participate this year, including Hemma Hemma, Gaels, Dos Reales, and more. It is smart to check each spot’s hours before visiting this week, be patient, and tip generously!
I’m happy (that’s a weird word given the predicament we find ourselves in here, but still) happy to share more restaurants that are stepping in to aid neighbors so no one goes hungry. The Book Club in Mission is offering a free cheese toasty (made with their fresh-baked bread) to anyone, any day, from 2 – 6 p.m. After all, “hunger isn’t shameful,” as they say in their social media post. Both Cafe Cà Phê and Hemma Hemma are collecting donations for Harvesters, and if you bring in 10 or more items, you’ll receive 10% off your food at both places.
Closing
Zhoug Mediterranean: The West 39th St. location of Zhoug Mediterranean, which only recently opened, has now closed. Zhoug’s Lenexa City Center restaurant remains open. This fresh Mediterranean spot first started as a pop-up in Lawrence, KS.
November 13
Something Good: From 6 – 8 p.m., the neighborhood bar in downtown KC’s garment district is hosting a book swap! It is free to participate, just bring at least one gently used book to exchange, and stick around for a cocktail, a game of pool, or camaraderie with other bookish peers.
November 14
Ruby Jean’s Juicery: Ruby Jean’s is hosting a 12-hour food and donation drive for their neighbor, Operation Breakthrough. Hot 103 Jamz will be broadcasting live from the restaurant and juicery. By the way, Ruby Jean’s has a holiday catering menu open now for preorders–let the produce experts handle your veggies and sides.
Guy’s Deli: The Westport (Kelly’s) location of Guy’s is celebrating National Pickle Day. Get a large dill dough pizza for $14.99 or snag just a slice to try it. If you’re anything like me, the adventure will pay off and you’ll want to take in all the dill dough you can handle.
November 15
Sagebrush: The small Rosedale bar, Sagebrush, was your winner of Best New Bar of 2025! Starting at 5 p.m., they’re hosting Bread Friends (some of my favorite bagels in KC) and Fare Jane for a friendsgiving-themed menu of sandwiches, panzanella salads, and cookies.
November 16
Museum of Kansas City: Did you recently hear about HerCafe from KCUR? This weekend, you have a chance to try it for yourself. From 1 – 4 p.m., HerCafe will be on the first floor of the Museum of Kansas City, selling seasonal matcha flavors like peach cobbler, pumpkin spice, and blueberry crumble. It’s a fabulous excuse to check out the free museum if you’ve never been!
Boulevard Brewing Co.: A KC-collab we should have seen coming… Boulevard is partnering with Screenland Armour for a “high society” film night. To celebrate the launch of the new Quirk THC products, Boulevard will be at Screenland for the 6:30 showing of The Big Lebowski. This is the first of a new High Society Cinema Club, and tickets are just $5. At an industry event on Monday night, I tried the new Quirk THC seltzer and got to explore Atlas 9. The flavor was pleasant and lighter than other THC bevvies, but the result was right on par with what I expect. It was slightly sweeter than the regular (alcoholic) Quirk line.
Plan Ahead
Bamboo Penny’s: Get in the Wicked spirit for good at Bamboo Penny’s in Park Place before seeing the new movie, Wicked: For Good. On Wednesday, November 19, the upscale Thai restaurant is hosting a Wicked party that features a food buffet and build your own cocktail bar, movie-themed bingo and games, a costume contest, and more–all with the backdrop of the first Wicked movie playing. The pink and green party starts at 6 p.m., and tickets are $60.
