Something New
F35BBQ: North KC’s F325 BBQ has launched a take-home version of their homemade BBQ sauce. At $8 per bottle, it can be purchased at their restaurant in two flavors: Original and Firebox Spicy.
KC Bier Co.: Game days are better with local beer. KC Bier Co. has released ArrowRed Lager, a red lager in a red-kingdom-inspired can. It is available now at the brewery’s bierhall and some area restaurants/bars.
Opening
Betty Rae’s Ice Cream: Betty Rae’s has expanded again, with a new shop open in Prarie Village–specifically at 95th and Nall. It is now open seven days a week, but on Thursday, August 22, guests can enjoy a free waffle cone upgrade all day.
August 23
André’s Confiserie Suisse: St. Louis-based Clementine’s Naughty & Nice Ice Cream is popping up for two sweet days at Andre’s in South Plaza. They will be serving five fan favorites in scoops or pints, and the flavors that caught my attention were the Gooey Butter Cake and Strawberry Balsamic White Pepper. Boozy and vegan options are also available. Treat yourself between 3 – 10 p.m. on Friday and 12 – 10 p.m. on Saturday.
Bar & Rec: Westport’s Bar & Rec arcade bar is doing their part to help teachers decompress after the first week of school. From 4 – 7 p.m., teachers get 50% off drinks. The back-to-school happy hour event also features school supplies and a raffle giveaway!
Lonnie’s Reno Club: Lonnie and crew inside the Ambassador Hotel are introducing a new flare to the Lonnie’s Reno Club show. For two weekends only, both the music and the four-course dinner will pay homage to New Orleans. Think jumbo lump crab cake, preserved lemon, petite mustard greens, and more. Tickets start at $35 to reserve your seat and a welcome cocktail, then dinner and additional drinks are charged extra.
August 24
DoubleTap VR Bar: The time has come for the 4th Annual Beer Olympics at DoubleTap in River Market. Teams of two will compete for a chance at medals and prizes. The entry fee, to be paid in advance, is $10 and includes a bucket of beer. Start time is 10:30 a.m.
Up-Down Arcade Bar: Keep the games going with a visit to Up-Down in Crossroads. Starting at 7 p.m., Up-Down will be slinging glizzys, breaking out the yard games, and creating a relaxed backyard BBQ atmosphere.
August 25
Fox & Pearl: As school is starting for many, bid adieu to summer with a party from Tom’s Town and Fox & Pearl. Tickets are $30 each, with multiple seating times to choose from. Each ticket includes two drinks and a snack buffet inspired by brunch or happy hour, depending on the time you choose.
Boulevard Tours & Rec: A few spots are left to set up your tailgating rig at Boulevard’s Tailgate Championship with Creed Humphrey. All proceeds benefit KC Pet Project. The tailgating event is free to attend, and guests can enjoy Boulevard food and drinks, contests, and more from 12 – 2 p.m.
Mr. D’s Donuts: It’s the second annual DonutCon at Mr. D’s Donut Shop in Shawnee, KS! Stop by between 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. for vendors, limited-edition donuts, a donut-eating competition, and live performances. Come hungry–food vendors include Origin Viet Cafe, Fika Coffee KC, Sugarfold, Hellen’s Vietnamese Chili Oil, and more. I’m not sure what the specialty donuts will be, but the blueberry donut at Mr. D’s is one of my favorites in the whole metro!
Plan Ahead
Boulevard Tours & Rec: If the aforementioned tailgating party wasn’t your vibe, maybe this will be. On Wednesday, Aug. 28, Boulevard is throwing a Swiftie trivia night–specifically, The Tortured Trivia Department. Tickets are $13 (of course) and include one drink. The fun kicks off at 6 p.m.
