This week's Kansas City restaurant news.

Life in KC is pretty delicious. In fact, there is often so much going on that it can be hard to decide where to go and what to try.

That’s where I come in.

I’ve curated this weekly list of events, openings, deals, and celebrations to keep you in-the-know. Cheers!

Something New

News Bites: Mean Mule Distilling in Crossroads has launched a new canned beverage: Watermelon Poblano. If you’re a fan of their Sgt. Melon Pepper cocktail, this is for you. The canned cocktail is made with 100% agave spirits and natural flavors, and is available for pre-order now, at four for $14.99.

To my surprise, just a little, the Kentucky Derby is a thing for many restaurants and bars. Many spots around the metro are celebrating it with events, specials, and of course, hats. For example, J. Rieger & Co’s annual event’s tickets start at $100, but I appreciate the focus on fashion–complete with a sponsorship by Halls. SERV is combining the fun of Cinco de Mayo and the famed horse race for events on Saturday, while The House and The Brass Onion offer their own specials during respective watch parties. Blanc Champagne Bar is partnering with Sherri’s Cigar Lounge and Holladay Distillery for a sunny rooftop party. And the winner for what looks like the most casual fun is Hank’s Garage and Grill. The new Shawnee spot will, naturally, offer mint juleps, food specials, and a hat contest, but the real show here: a hobby horse competition. I’m cackling (& impressed) already.

Percheron is officially open for the season atop the Crossroads Hotel roof. This year’s menu brings back the Mediterranean inspiration with an abundance of mezze options, well-seasoned dishes, and summery cocktails. I recommend going with a small group so you can order more and share–including the messy but oh-so-worth-it wings, hamachi crudo, and the customizable fresh mezze platter.

May 3

Weston Wine Festival: The 9th annual Weston Wine Festival kicks off at noon at Pirtle Winery. Tickets start at $35 and include live music entertainment and tastings from 10 area wineries. Food trucks will be at the winery, with additional restaurants within walking distance.

May 4

Second Best Coffee: The Pink Pony Track Club will take off at 10 a.m. from Second Best Coffee to run (or walk) the Trolley Trail. The full route is 1.5 miles, and all levels are welcome. Treat yourself to one of their baked goods or a coffee after. You deserve it.

Tacos Valentina: This is the event you’re looking for. Cinco de Mayo meets Star Wars at Tacos Valentina in Crossroads. “May the Cinco be with you” runs from 12 – 4 p.m. in the south lot at Tacos Valentina, and features special food and drink features, a paleta bar from French Custard, music, and an artist market. No tickets or reservations are needed, just stop by.

Westport: Many of the Westport bars and restaurants are celebrating Cinco de Mayo with margs a day early with Fiesta Westport. Between 2 – 5 p.m., participants can pick one of two routes to sample margaritas. Tickets are $28 and the hardest part is deciding which tasting path to choose!

Plan ahead

McLain’s: Teachers and nurses, hear ye! McLain’s wants to treat you. On May 6, teachers can show their ID at checkout for any free drink. Nurses, May 7 is your day. This offer is good at all six McLain’s Market and Bakery locations.
