KC Sipps: A whopping six new spots to dish & drink in KC
Your Kansas City restaurant guide.
Looking for delicious plans? Whether you want to impress a date, show your fam the best of KC, or just get out of the house, we’ve got you covered… all while supporting (mostly) local.
Here is your weekly roundup of the best food and drink offerings around Kansas City. Cheers!
Something New
The Pitch Burger Week: Our annual burger week is happening NOW! The Pitch has partnered with restaurants to offer half-price specialty burgers through July 21. From a mac and cheese burger to a smash burger with candied bacon, we have it all. As always, no coupons or codes are necessary, just show up and tip generously.
Green Dirt Farm: Congrats to the sheep, makers, and cheesemongers of Green Dirt Farm! A few of their cheeses earned national recognition at the American Cheese Society competition. Ask to try first-place winners Dirt Lover and Fresh Rosemary at your next visit to the farm or to Green Dirt on Oak in Crossroads.
Opening
Holy Brunch: New to Westport is a decadent brunch spot. Holy Brunch features wings, sausage, shrimp, and more, but the fun waffle dishes caught my eye first. It is open every day at 11 a.m. but follow along on social media for updates and exact times.
The Blue Palm: We first covered the Blue Palm Tiki plans in November, and now it is open! The new Strawberry Hill tiki bar is open Wednesdays through Sundays at 5:30 p.m. Reservations and walk-ins are welcome.
Westport Landing: Westport is slowly getting its groove back. Two new spots, Westport Landing and The Patio, open on Friday, June 19 at 5 p.m. From 10 p.m. – 12 a.m., guests can celebrate with drink specials at both spots, as well as sister bar Bar & Rec, like $2 wells and $3 lemon drop shots (my personal fave).
Axios Sud: Axios, the French bistro in Crestwood Shops, has expanded. Axios Sud, or South, is now solidly open in Park Place. It is open every day except Sundays and serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks.
12th Street Post: One of my favorite spots in KC, 12th Street Post, earned that title in part because of its in-house ADHDIY Craft Cafe. Until now, the West Bottoms “Cafe” was purely for a cute crafting theme–with a menu of DIY terrariums, embroidery, and more. However, now shoppers and crafters can enjoy beverages and local goodies at the Craft Cafe Waterin’ Hole! Saddle up to the bar for tea, kombucha, or n/a cocktails, and snacks from Yoli Tortilleria, Chamoy Boi, and Quarantine Cookie to fuel your fun.
Ground Control: James Beard Award-Winning Chef Celina Tio has opened Ground Control, directly below The Belfry in downtown KC. The intimate setting serves a tasting menu and cocktails, and is inspired by 80s and classic rock. It is open now, Wednesdays through Saturdays, starting at 5 p.m.
Closing
Pizza Tascio: The New York-style pizza joint that started in KC has permanently closed its Lawrence location. Pizza Tascio has six remaining locations from North KC, to Waldo, Belton, and more.
Chilakillers: After only a few months of operating out of Lenexa Public Market, Chilakillers has announced immediate closure. No plans have been shared yet to reopen its food truck, either.
July 18
Brewery Emperial: Billy Brady hosts the Bluegrass Jam at Crossroad’s Brewery Emperial. Bring your instruments and enjoy featured special guest performances by Lily B. Moonflower and Jake Keegan. It is happening from 6 – 9 p.m.
July 19
West 39th Street: The next 3rd Friday at West 39th St. is one you won’t want to miss. From 5 – 9 p.m. enjoy live music, local makers, boutique sales, pop-ups, and happy hours. This family-friendly event features the Latin Jazz Orchestra.
Ruby Jean’s Juicery: Juice Jamz Vol. 2 is happening at Ruby Jean’s Juicery from 6 – 10 p.m. Partnering with Sovereign Present, the night will be filled with food, music, and special performances by Jass, The Royal Chief, Shay Lyriq, DJ Doop, and MC Tres.
July 20
Oddly Correct Coffee Roasters: Baba’s Pantry is popping up at Oddly Correct at 11 a.m. Expect delicious dishes such as turmeric basmati rice with dried fruit and nuts, spiced halal beef with caramelized onions, and a vegan option with spiced seitan. All profits go to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund.
Hemma Hemma: Tickets are still available for the “Nourish Your Body: Cooking for Gut and Hormonal Health” workshop at Waldo’s Hemma Hemma. Let local experts guide you through a hands-on cooking class, explaining the relationship between nutrition, gut health, and hormonal balance. Tickets are $185.
July 21
Chingu Coffee: How’s your latte art? Whether you’re a pro barista or at-home cafe artist, here’s a chance to show off your skills. Chingu Coffe in West Plaza is hosting a latte art throwdown and neighborhood social. Competitors can register for just $5 starting at 5 p.m., and the contest starts at 6 p.m.
Moon Bar: Saranya Hubbard and her artful cocktails are taking over Wild Child in Shawnee. Reservations are still available from 5 – 11 p.m., but are expected to sell out. This special event will feature craft cocktails, bottled cocktails, merch, and Thai snacks.
Plan Ahead
Thelma’s Kitchen: Be among the first to welcome Thelma’s Kitchen and Reconciliation Services back open at 31st and Troost! A free grand opening event will be held at 9 a.m. on July 22. Following the ribbon-cutting event, Thelma’s Kitchen will be open for lunch service.
SipSteady: SipSteady is bringing the sober or sober-curious community together for a night of pickleball at Chicken N Pickle in North Kansas City. For $25, guests can sample SipSteady mocktails, enjoy one full pour of their choice, and play an hour of pickleball. This event is likely to sell out, so reserve your spot now.
