Life in KC is pretty delicious. In fact, there is often so much going on that it can be hard to decide where to go and what to try.

That’s where I come in.

I’ve curated this weekly list of events, openings, deals, and celebrations to keep you in-the-know. Cheers!

Today’s Tip

Have you ever wondered what happens to leftover restaurant food at the end of the day? Well, there are many options for handling excess food, but one method that restaurants may choose from gives you the opportunity to take it home. There is an app called Too Good To Go that connects users with leftover food that would otherwise go to waste. The app is free, and customers can reserve bags of food averaging $3.99-9.99. The packages are called Surprise Bags because customers have no control over the contents. I’m testing it out this week and will report back.

Opening

Incline on 9th: The new West Bottom’s bar and restaurant is throwing a grand opening celebration all weekend. They will launch a weekend brunch menu and show off the covered and heated patio. Pitch writer Tiffany Watts told me she recommends the Valtrex cocktail.

Sido’s Cuisine: Sido’s, a Mediterranean restaurant with locations in Iron District and Parlour, has opened a traditional brick-and-mortar spot. At 119th and Switzer in Overland Park, this is Sido’s first standalone restaurant and features family recipes that have been passed down for generations.

November 7

Vignettes: Vignettes’ pop-up theme bars aren’t always a must-visit. It depends on what themes speak to you. But if there’s one category they do best, its emo. My Chemical Barmance opens today and runs for only a few short weeks before the transition to a holiday bar. As always, Vignettes is 21+ only on Friday and Saturday, but open to all ages on Sunday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Reservations are encouraged on the weekends but not necessary, especially after opening weekend.

Kata Nori: The Crossroads hand-roll sushi bar, Kata Nori, is celebrating one year of business. Check out Pitch writer Jordan Baranowski’s story on it. All weekend long they are celebrating with discounts, gift card bonuses, freebies on future visits, and more. I have truly loved each item from each visit I’ve had there. It is a treat. But if I had to pinpoint just a few standouts, it would be the mushroom dish that could convert any fungi hater, and any of the spicy rolls.

November 10

Mitch e Amaro: North KC’s cocktail bar and supply store is hosting a “Drinking Club With A Reading Problem.” Join at 6:30 p.m. for drinks, followed by a discussion at 7. This time, the book is The God Of The Woods by Liz Moore. The gathering is free–just pay for the drinks of your choosing. The extensive menu also includes non-alcoholic options. Now get to reading!

Plan Ahead

1900 Barker: For those who find themselves bopping around Lawrence, 1900 Barker on Mass is introducing a happy hour. Starting November 11, happy hour deals will be available from 4 – 8 p.m. on weekdays. The menu will feature a selection of natural wines, house-made snacks, beer, and batched cocktails.

The Mandarin: November 23 is tea time at the lovely Mandarin space next to Vivilore in Independence. A $50 ticket includes individual quiche, soup, and salad, plus a shareable display of dainty sandwiches, scones, sweets, and tea. This fall-themed tea event is a fabulous option to do with a parent or grandparent.
