KC Monarchs Update is our weekly look at what’s happening with hometown baseball heroes, both at Legends Field and on the road. Check out their season schedule here.

The Kansas City Monarchs have the best record in the league, and their pitching staff has been a huge reason why.

In their last five games, they have struck out 53 batters and allowed only 17 walks. This staff has the most strikeouts in the league this season with 119. They also have a league-best 3.40 ERA.

The Monarchs’ bullpen has been nothing short of exceptional. In their last five games, the bullpen has allowed just four earned runs and struck out 27 batters.

The reigning American Association champions are at home this weekend, with games against the Lincoln Saltdogs Friday through Sunday from Legends Field in Kansas City, Kansas.

Monarchs reliever J.C. Keys is a major part of this successful bullpen. Keys has made four appearances for the Monarchs and earned the win in three of them. Keys has enjoyed the ride so far in 2024 after sitting out the 2023 season.

“It’s been fun,” Keys said. “Being able to be back in baseball after a year off is a blessing, and it is amazing to be able to play baseball here.”

In 6.1 innings of work, Keys has allowed one run on only two hits and five walks. He has struck out five in that span as well. Finding a bright spot in a bullpen can take time, but Keys has proven reliable this season.

Monarchs reliever Zack Leban has carved out that role amongst the many successful arms in this Monarchs bullpen.

“Any time you are pitching in a close game, there is a little bit more on the line,” Leban said. “It is fun to come in with the game on the line, do or die, and know you are trusted.”
