Karma Vision

Bobby Sauder, the lead singer of the controlled orchestral group Mammoth Life, approaches the ramshackle psych-pop of Karma Vision with what sounds like wanton abandon. The EP is frantic, off-the-cuff and brimming with a whole bunch of ideas that meld together with surprising consistency. “Funnel Cloud” pairs a spacey, swirling organ with a dopey country groove to spin a weird tale of a town turned upside down by a tornado. “Cowboys and Indians” features alto saxophone that sounds like 50 percent makeshift mariachi band and 50 percent smooth jazz — and 100 percent random. The sax takes the spotlight on the closing instrumental, “Nite Gliding,” which, despite its title, doesn’t sound at all like Kenny G. Actor John Goodman EP isn’t necessarily cohesive, but that’s part of its appeal. Songs weave in and out of surfy rhythms, chanted harmonies, wonky keyboards and bursts of pure pop bliss.
