Kareem Hurley, Rebecca Smith charged after baby’s broken femur goes untreated for weeks

Earlier this week, Kareem Hurley and his fiance Rebecca Smith noticed something wonky with their 2-month-old son’s legs. They’re not doctors. How were they supposed to know the kid’s femur was broken in two places?

Hurley, 23, and Smith, 22, took the baby to Children’s Mercy Hospital on Tuesday. Smith said she’d noticed the swelling the previous morning, and that the child had been “cranky and restless.” Repeatedly changing his diaper didn’t help. Tuesday morning, she told the hospital staff, she noticed that both of her baby’s legs were crooked.

That same day, Smith and Hurley were charged with first-degree endangerment of a child.
