Kansas soda drinkers to be treated like smokers

Pepsi and Coke drinkers in Kansas better get ready to be treated like smokers.

Kansas state Sen. John Vratil, a Leawood Republican, is pushing a penny tax for every teaspoon of sugar in soda, which breaks down to about a dime per 12-ounce can, according to The Associated Press.

The bill made it out of the Senate Ways and Means

Committee Tuesday.

It’s all part of trying to make up for a $467 million budget shortfall (and it’s going to come out of your pocket).

Smokers, don’t think for a second that the fat cats in Topeka are done with you; the Senate is also considering a tobacco tax increase.
