Kansas City Zoo will be getting a female companion for polar bear Nikita

Here’s hoping that Nikita, the 6-year-old male polar bear at the Kansas City Zoo, likes older women. Zoo officials made it official yesterday, announcing that a female companion for Nikita is headed for Kansas City.

Berlin is a 23-year-old female polar bear, who has been temporarily staying in a zoo in St. Paul, Minnesota. In June, she briefly escaped her enclosure at the Lake Superior Zoo after it was flooded by torrential rains. The Associated Press reports that Kansas City Zoo veterinarian Kirk Suedmeyer visited the St. Paul Zoo yesterday and pronounced that Berlin was fit to travel. She is expected to arrive next week and will be in quarantine for the next 30 days. If you want to know how Nikita feels about the deal, you can check in with him at KCTV Channel 5’s live webcam of his enclosure.
