Kansas City will soon have a streetcar

Downtown Kansas City today voted in favor of the proposed $100 million construction of a two-mile streetcar line between Union Station and the River Market. The mail-in ballots were due yesterday and were counted this afternoon. There were two questions on the mail-in ballots, one regarding whether to raise sales taxes downtown and one regarding whether to raise property taxes downtown. On the former, voters were in favor 351-198; on the latter, voters were in favor 344-206.
The proposal calls for construction to begin next year, and for the streetcar to be up and running (primarily on Main Street) by 2015. To bone up on everything KC-streetcar-related, check out our cover story in last week’s issue.
