Kansas City Sound

Before Charlie Parker, there was Benny Carter, a native New Yorker whose bluesy, pure sax tone was steeped in Kansas City jazz. To give props to the late, great altoist, composer and bandleader, the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra presents Sweet Kansas City, a performance of the music of Carter’s Kansas City Suite, at 8 p.m. at the Folly Theater (300 West 12th Street). Written for the Count Basie Orchestra in 1960, the 10 original tunes that make up Kansas City Suite include “Vine Street Rumble” and “Jackson County Jubilee” and celebrate the 1930s jazz scene in Kansas City. Tickets cost $25 to $45; students get in free. Call the Central Ticket Office at 816-235-6222 or see tickets.cto.umkc.edu/public.
