Where to celebrate Pride in Kansas City this weekend
It’s here, it’s queer: Pride Week arrives in Kansas City this weekend. Below, some options for coming out and participating.
Kansas City Pride Fest
May 31 – June 2, Berkley Riverfront Park
The biggest Pride event is at Berkley Riverfront Park this weekend and includes headliners Material Girl (serving “the essence of a Madonna and Lady Gaga concert experience”), Grammy-winning artist Mýa, and Daya, plus performances from Heartland Men’s Chorus, Hamburger Mary’s drag queens, Missie B’s, and more. Weekend activities include LGBTQIA+ Youth Hang Out, a carnival with a kids zone (Pride Fest is family friendly!), and a volleyball tournament.
Transfiguration Music and Arts Pride Festival
May 31 – June 1, Quixotic
Hosted by Un/Tuck, this queer-and-trans-centric music and arts festival is an alternative to KC Pride Fest. “We want to move away from a singular idea of what it means to be queer or gay or trans in the Midwest,” Zoey Shopmaker, founder of the event, recently told us. The festival focuses on music, pop culture, and fashion, with Calvin Arsenia playing Saturday night along with local performers Lovegurl, The Black Creatures, Lava Dreams, and MX.MRS throughout the weekend. Read more about the festival here.
May 31 – June 2, Missie B’s
Bring your Pride Fest wristband to Missie B’s on Saturday and Sunday night and get in free. Grab a drink at the bar or hit the dance floor upstairs, then stick around for the 10:30 p.m. show: The Daisy Buckët Show on Friday, The Dirty Dorothy Show on Saturday, and The Flo Show on Sunday.
Beer Bust: Pride
June 1, Hamburger Mary’s
Hamburger Mary’s annual Beer Bust is an occasion of “leather, lace, fur, fairies, uniforms, unicorns, gear, glitter, halos and hairy bodies.” Adult film industry artist Jake Morgan is coming back for the second year, and Hamburger Mary’s is giving away a $50 cash prize to the best “Big F@ggy Bear in KC.” And aside from the annual event, Hamburger Mary’s weekly events are still happening. Dining with the Divas drag show is on Friday at 9 p.m., Maryoke (Mary’s Karaoke) hosted by Scooby at 10:30pm Friday and Saturday night, and (my personal favorite) Drag Brunch on Sunday mornings, hosted by Genewa Stanwyck, aka @whoreof84.
June 31 – June 1, Woody’s KC
The Broadway Blvd LGBTQ+ bar Woody’s is hosting two Pride parties. On Friday, GLOW is a black light event with food, specialty drinks (including jell-o shots), and a neon paint station. DJs will be mixing from 9 pm to midnight. Come back on Saturday for Pride Foam-O, a foam party in the back parking lot that features, yes, a clothing check, because this foam party is encourages you to wear only your underwear (though it’s not required).
Art and Yoga Rainbow Flow
June 1, The Fontaine
Still colorful but significantly more relaxing, “Art and Yoga Flow: Rainbow Edition” is a Pride-themed interactive yoga and painting experience. After an hour of yoga, collaborate on a rainbow-inspired canvas that will be donated to Save, Inc., along with a portion of ticket sales.
And a few more events…
Tachno Taco Pride Party
June 1, Mission Taco South Plaza
Tacos and shots are only $2 after 10 pm, plus a DJ is spinning until midnight.
May 31, Arvest Bank Theatre at The Midland
Although not directly correlated with Pride, Amanda Palmer is coming to Kansas City, fresh off her St. Louis visit (and an impromptu speech at that city’s Planned Parenthood Emergency Response Rally).
May 31, Sidekicks Saloon
Sidekicks hosts its weekly 3D Party with a 9 p.m. show and dancing to follow.
