Kansas City loses Big 12 women’s basketball tournament a year earlier than expected

  • Women first?

It’s hard to paint this as a “win” for Kansas City, Missouri. The Big 12 is moving the women’s basketball tournament out of Kansas City a year early, the Star reported. In 2013, the tourney will be in Dallas. In 2014, it’ll be played in Oklahoma City.

KC will hold the tournament for one more year (this coming March at Municipal Auditorium). The men’s basketball tournament is still set for the Sprint Center through 2014.

“I would like to thank the Kansas City Sports Commission for accommodating our desire to separate the men’s and women’s basketball championships,” interim commissioner Chuck Neinas said in a statement. “Kansas City continues to be a valuable partner of the Big 12.”
