Kansas City is quickly turning into the place to be when it comes to pro sports, and the world of professional volleyball has taken notice. The Pro Volleyball Federation has recently announced plans for a 2025 expansion team right here. The team, owned by Missy and Kent McCarthy has found the perfect home here according to Kansas City Sports Commission and Visit KC CEO, Kathy Nelson.
“When I look at the trajectory of women’s sports and how they’ve grown in participation, investment, and viewership, I’m proud to say Kansas City is leading the way, and I can’t wait to see the region embrace professional women’s volleyball,” says Nelson. “This is a perfect addition to our portfolio of professional teams and will complement the thriving youth and collegiate volleyball programs in our region.”
Kansas City is home to around 17,000 club volleyball players, 3,000 coaches, and 15 collegiate-level teams. It’s safe to say the new pro team will have no shortage of local talent.
“It’s no coincidence we wanted Kansas City to be the home of our women’s professional volleyball team. Yes, it holds a special place in our hearts, but Kansas City is also on the rise. The energy and momentum are electric; you can feel it,” says McCarthy.
According to the press release, “Pro Volleyball Federation is setting an unprecedented standard for women’s professional volleyball in North America by utilizing major arenas, paying players a living wage, and providing critical opportunities for elite athletes to pursue professional careers in the United States.”
The announcements for leadership positions and team branding are planned to take place in 2024. More information can be found on Pro Volleyball Federation’s website.
