Justin Lake Whedon’s Second and Last Listening Party at Record Bar

Last month, local musician Justin Lake Whedon started a new ritual of musical mind expansion at Record Bar — a themed listening party. During Justin Lake Whedon’s Listening Party, the DJ puts on a bunch of songs that fall into the same genre group, like shoegaze. His goal is to play some tracks that a lot of folks haven’t heard of — or at least that they rarely hear while out at the bars. After his December 15 party, Whedon even posted his entire playlist on his blog.
For tonight, he’s assembled music that you might call post-punk, dark wave or experimental. But after only the second event, what might have been a notable monthly tradition comes to an end. Whedon and his wife, Melinda (who together make up the band Ebon), are ditching Kansas City for the warmer climes of California. Let’s hope he kickstarts the event out there or at least keeps up his blog.
