Taking Freddie Mercury’s “Keep Yourself Alive” mantra to heart, Kansas City’s house music audience just won’t give up the ghost. And Kabal fuels that longevity drive. Don’t fear the stereotypes about Kabal — it’s neither particularly exclusive nor dangerous. (This is Kansas City, people.) Granted, thuggish types sometimes gather upstairs on weekend nights, but if that makes you uncomfortable, head downstairs — the décor is vastly better than, say, Mi Cocina’s basement — get a drink and dig the beats and light show. This Friday the 13th, Frisky keeps the bad mojo away by bringing John Larner (pictured), a DJ and remix artist from Indianapolis on the heavily jazz-influenced Muzique Boutique label. Saturday, the club will be more difficult to negotiate, but the music will be worth it. David Scuba, who cut his teeth in the exotic climes of Ibiza, Spain, spins while the earnest horndogs behind Reveal Magazine drool over proud skanks until their irises turn into miniature breasts. It’s the wolfish lads’ “fashion model search,” which, as you can imagine, always draws a big(-breasted) crowd.
