John I. Battaglia charged with trying to run over police

After yesterday morning’s chase, police charged John I. Battaglia, 25, with second-degree assault on a law officer and armed criminal action. His alleged weapon of choice: a 1981 black-on-grey Chevy Corvette.
Police encountered Battaglia on a car check near Anderson and Wheeling. They grew suspicious when the ‘Vette’s license plate came back from a different car, according to the probable cause statement.
Prosecutors say Battaglia took off on foot and was able to elude officers. He circled back to his car and attempted to drive away, ignoring an officer’s commands to stop. As he was fleeing, he encountered a second officer and allegedly hit the gas and steered toward the cop.
The officer put a bullet into the Corvette then dodged out of the way. That’s when Battaglia allegedly U-turned to have another try. Again, the cop shot.
Battaglia allegedly fled the scene in his shot-up ‘Vette, but was apprehended near Independence and Manchester Street. He was treated for injuries.
