Jet-Set Video Future

The animation and design studio MK12 is the focus of today’s Current Perspectives lecture series at the Kansas City Art Institute. The collective, which was founded in 2000 by KCAI graduates, has produced work over the past decade that bridges the avant-garde (see History of America, its Sundance-selected short film about a war between cowboys and astronauts) to the mainstream (as in the animated effects in Will Ferrell’s Stranger Than Fiction). Blending live action with graphic-design principles and computer animation, MK12’s style is vivid, striking and constantly changing from project to project. If you enjoyed the gorgeous interstitial videos from Electronic Arts’ Beatles edition of Rock Band or the opening animation sequence from Quantum of Solace (the last Bond film), attend the lecture at 7 p.m. in Epperson Auditorium, located in Vanderslice Hall at the KCAI campus (4415 Warwick, 816-472-4852). The lecture is free.
