Photos: Jeremie Albino at recordBar on the Long Road Home
Valentine’s Day 2024 I found myself at recordBar winding down after a big, weird day in Kansas City. Remnants of confetti were strewn all across the streets and sidewalks and I found myself remembering that last year I had the exact same experience; a Chiefs Super Bowl win parade in the morning, a lowkey, way-more-chill live music experience in the evening.
Last year was Noah Kahan at The Truman, and this night was Jeremie Albino.
The bar was quiet as I made my way in as the crowd stuck to the walls and tables surrounding the stage leaving the floor open. First up on the roster was Julia Othmer, an incredibly captivating singer/piano player. My friend who accompanied me leaned over a few songs in and said, “She’s like a mix of Lady Gaga and Lana Del Rey!” I couldn’t have agreed more–her vocals were powerful and demanding but also floaty and enticing. She was so expressive and told the audience that some songs just insist on being played, and that she likes to listen for which ones are calling out to her per set. I was honestly enthralled watching her as she sat behind the keys in her red heels. She thanked everyone for coming and even talked to a few members of the audience, making her set feel even more intimate and inviting. Julia mentioned she would be playing at The Ship soon in the West Bottoms, and I highly recommend checking her out if you can. I know I’ll be there.
Next up was Benjamin Dakota Rogers. This folky Americana singer from Canada blew me away! He had a soulful air about him and his background in bluegrass and off-grid style of living shown through his vocals. A storyteller and a troubadour his style is nestled alongside artists like Tyler Childers, Foy Vance, Colter Wall, and Sierra Ferrell. His stage presence was honestly very endearing and he really seemed like such a heartfelt guy. He invited the audience to move in closer as he told little excerpts for each song about his home and how he lives. He’ll be joining Jeremie Albino for the rest of this leg of tour, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he is headlining his own U.S tour soon.
Jeremie soon took the stage with his band and suddenly the floor was packed. Jeremie’s music has a little bit of everything seemingly drawing inspiration from roots music with a bit of blues, and folk. His stage presence almost reminded me of Elvis, just in the way that it felt very clean and had the late ‘50s sort of vibe. My friend and I danced around as I took pictures, and had the best time just enjoying the set. Jeremie was accompanied by his band, and really filled the space with a fun collaborative energy. You could tell they were having fun and it let the audience join in.
Having collaborated with artists like Cat Clyde, Jeremie has been climbing the ranks as an artist in this genre as a must know. His latest album Tears You Hide is a reminder of life’s different events from love, family, heartbreak and everything in between. Jeremie rounded the night off right and this show was definitely one of the best I have been to in awhile.
