Jazz Beat: Roy Ayers plays the Blue Room Friday night

Roy Ayers came to the attention of jazz fans in the 1960s, with his post-bop-style vibraphone. But he’s never been an artist content to stand pat. Since the 1970s, his music has encompassed R&B, jazz-funk and hip-hop. His mix of bluesy soul and gleeful funk has made him one of the most sampled artists by rappers. Ayers has said, “I like that happy feeling all of the time, so that ingredient is still there.” It sure is. The Blue Room has been packing in crowds for its early Friday Indigo Hour shows with neo-soul. Friday, expect the Godfather of Neo-Soul — as Ayers has been dubbed — to draw a crowd long into the night.
