Jazz Beat: Robert Glasper at the Folly
Robert Glasper is part of the new century’s jazz vanguard: He has performed with bassist Christian McBride and trumpeters Terence Blanchard and Roy Hargrove, and among his own albums, 2012’s Black Radio won a Grammy. That award was for Best R&B Album, and indeed the keyboardist and composer weds jazz with R&B, neo-soul and hip-hop. In 2015, he released a CD covering the music of Radiohead, John Legend and Joni Mitchell; last year, he played keyboards on Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy-winning To Pimp a Butterfly and recorded an album reinterpreting the music of Miles Davis in modern ways the adventurous Davis himself likely would have enjoyed. Saturday night, the Robert Glasper Trio pays its first visit to the Folly.
