Rehearsal big bands are common in jazz. They perform publicly on a regular schedule for little pay, playing arrangements ranging from classic Ellington to the modern voicings of Maria Schneider to band members’ originals. Clint Ashlock’s New Jazz Order Big Band is one of Kansas City’s best. Ashlock, who also directs the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, brings together a mix of this city’s young and experienced jazz musicians. In fact, for many of the young ones dominating KC today, performing in New Jazz Order is a rite of passage. With the Broadway Kansas City closing, New Jazz Order has a new home, date and time. You can hear the group each Wednesday at Green Lady Lounge’s downstairs Orion Room.
