JAZZ BEAT: Marcus Hampton Septet play the Blue Room Friday night

Trumpeter Marcus Hampton’s relatives are jazz royalty. His cousin is legendary vibraphonist Lionel Hampton, and his nephew is trombonist Slide Hampton. He composes and performs with old-school finesse, his trumpet elegantly darting from note to note, his septet a single swinging voice. In that ensemble, Marcus, who moved to this area a couple of years ago, surrounds himself with some of Kansas City’s jazz best. Saxophonist Brad Gregory, trombonist Steve Dekker and bassist James Albright are all members of the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, with Gregory in particular a wickedly inventive soloist whose playing we don’t have nearly enough opportunities to enjoy. Pianist Roger Wilder and drummer Todd Strait round out the group. Expect a mix of original compositions and traditional jazz.
