Jazz Beat: Horacescope, Friday at the Art Factory
Bassist James Albright and saxophonist David Chael are longtime anchors of the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra. Trumpeter Stan Kessler and pianist Roger Wilder have been key to propelling one of this city’s most popular jazz ensembles, Sons of Brazil, for a quarter-century. Drummer Sam Wisman performs all over town, including monthly gigs with the People’s Liberation Big Band. But as impressive as those combined credentials sound, they just brush the surface of what the ensemble Horacescope delivers. The combo, devoted to performing the compositions of legendary jazz pianist Horace Silver, transcends that mission by affording us the chance to enjoy five of this city’s premier musicians coming together to play jazz with intelligence, skill and free-flowing delight. Friday night, they’re at Art Factory, which is establishing itself as Overland Park’s can’t-miss jazz destination.
