Jazz Beat: Horacescope, at the Blue Room

Any jazz fans worth their salt will recognize the music of the late pianist and composer Horace Silver — even if they may not be able to name one of his pieces off the bat. Enter KC quintet Horacescope, an ensemble dedicated to playing Silver’s compositions in all their contemporary glory. Thursday night at the Blue Room, you’ll find Stan Kessler on trumpet, Dave Chael on saxophone, Roger Wilder on piano, James Albright on bass and Sam Wisman on drums as they re-create Silver’s hard-boppin’ style, with phrases that hint at gospel and blues.
