Jazz Beat: Everette DeVan Celebration
The last Hammond B-3 organ was manufactured more than 40 years ago, and to this day no other musical instrument matches its sound. It can dance with excitement or wail in soulful delight, and its voice spans every genre of popular music — jazz, blues, gospel, rock, R&B and funk. Among the masters of the instrument is Kansas City’s Everette DeVan, whom old-timers recall raising the roof with the band sssSlick at the old Epicurean Lounge on Troost. Jazz fans today know not just DeVan’s own classic sound but also the musicians he has trained over the years, such as singer Eboni Fondren, guitarist Matt Hopper and B-3 organist Chris Hazelton. Sunday is DeVan’s birthday, and his disciples, friends and fans will gather at Green Lady Lounge to celebrate — and to enjoy some wicked jazz.
