Jazz Beat: Dominique Sanders Trio, at Green Lady Lounge

Bassist Dominique Sanders stands out among Kansas City’s young jazz talent. He can play standards with the best musicians but has a wholly unconventional take on jazz with his new album. With sampling and sound effects and music ranging from R&B and funk to early hip-hop to compositions just this side of Pat Metheny, Sanders looks less at where jazz has been and more at where a young musician — immersed in a full range of modern musical influences — can go. This is music with an edge, by an artist unafraid to experiment and explore. Sanders leads a trio at Green Lady Lounge Friday night, with Andrew Ouellette on piano and Ryan Lee on drums. Expect a set that’s quite a contrast to Green Lady’s traditional surroundings (and usual sound, for that matter).
