JAZZ BEAT: David Basse/Joe Cartwright Septet plays the Blue Room Saturday night
Singer David Basse and pianist Joe Cartwright are fixtures of Kansas City jazz. Basse, with his unexpected phrasing and voice that rides a gruff but soulful edge, first captured KC’s attention with the popular City Light Orchestra in the 1980s. Cartwright, with his bluesy and inventive mastery of the music, has backed just about everyone in this city’s jazz scene over the last three decades. They’re two of the leads on the weekly 12th Street Jump radio show. Earlier this year, they recorded a live album in Pilgrim Chapel, at 38th Street and Gillham Road. Friday night, they celebrate its release with Stephen Martin on saxophone, Nate Nall on trumpet, Jason Goudeau on trombone, Seth Lee on bass and Taylor Babb on drums.
