Jazz Beat: Brett Jackson Quartet, at Green Lady Lounge

Brett Jackson’s quartet has played occasional gigs at the Green Lady Lounge. But starting this month, it takes over the late show there each Thursday. Jackson preforms both tenor and the far less commonly heard baritone sax (occasionally flute, too), and his rich tone flows through solos that are alternately dynamic deliciously sinuous. He’s one of the stars of the new generation of KC jazz. With him is Chris Hazelton — leader of Green Lady staple the Boogaloo 7 — on B-3 organ, Matt Hopper on guitar and Kevin Frazee on drums. It’s the classic organ trio plus a sax as the star, playing traditional jazz with a dash of funk.
