Jason Kander: ‘Would be easier to fake a Mars landing’ than cast 3-5 million illegal votes

Jason Kander couldn’t quite pull out a victory over Roy Blunt in the race for U.S. Senate last fall. But his star in Democratic circles continues to rise. Kander was the first name out of President Obama’s mouth last week when asked to identify politicians he sees as future leaders of the Democratic Party.
As the former Secretary of State of Missouri, Kander also supervised statewide elections in Missouri. Which makes Kander a good person for Jake Tapper to bring on his show to discuss how crazy it is that Donald Trump continues to say that 3-5 million people voted illegally in the last election.
Asked by Tapper whether there’s any reason to think there was widespread voter fraud in the millions, let alone thousands, Kander replies, “No, there’s absolutely no reason to believe that. This is a lie — but actually not a new lie, it’s just the biggest version of an old lie that, honestly, the Republican Party has been telling for a while.”
Tapper: “What kind of conspiracy would be necessary for three to five million people to illegally cast votes? Hundreds of people, including governors, secretaries of state? What would need to happen?”
Kander: “It would be easier to fake a Mars landing than to do that.”
Kander goes on to note that, in addition to statements like Trump’s endangering democracy in the United States, there has never been a reported case of voter impersonation fraud in the history of the state of Missouri. Voter impersonation is the rationale Republicans used to implement strict photo ID laws in states like North Carolina and Wisconsin. As Kander points out, both are swing states that Trump (narrowly) won. Wisconsin experienced its lowest voter turnout in twenty years in 2016.
