Japandroids

Japandroids infuse their music with enough unfettered exuberance for a coming-of-age movie. The Vancouver duo’s full-length debut, Post-Nothing, echoes the melodic, distortion-laden roar of Superchunk and Hüsker Dü. Noisy, ragged jams push meters into the red with manic shouts and syrupy, fuzzed-out chords. We used to dream/Now we worry about dying, they intone on the infectious “Young Hearts Spark Fire.” The song nearly proved prophetic. Last April, after a 10-hour drive to Calgary, guitarist Brian King suffered a perforated ulcer. The near-death experience postponed Japandroids’ first American tour, but it didn’t quell the group’s contagious vitality, which blooms again with a new 7-inch compilation, No Singles, in May.
