Janelle Monáe and the Roots to headline massive Open Spaces arts festival this fall

The Open Spaces festival announced today that pop force of nature (and KC native) Janelle Monáe and the Roots will be headlining “The Weekend” portion of the arts festival, which takes place October 12-14 at Starlight Theatre. The Roots will be playing Friday, October 12 and Monáe on Saturday the 13th, along with the Soul Rebels, the Vijay Iyay Sextet, and the Marcus Lewis Big Band, among others. Tickets for individual performances to the Roots and Monáe will be available beginning this Friday, July 13 at 10:00 a.m. via Starlight’s website; full weekend combo tickets will also be available.

The Open Spaces festival, dubbed the “Kansas City Arts Experience,” is a massive, novel undertaking that will take place August 25-October 28. It is a collaboration between the City of Kansas City, Missouri and philanthropist Scott Francis. The staggering 62-day come-and-go event will feature art installations in a wide variety of forms available to the public throughout the city, as well as exhibitions, concerts and other events taking place each weekend at the Village at Swope Park. The event culminates in “the Weekend” which features the concerts from the Roots and Monáe, as well as culinary events, poetry, theatre, film and more. Much more to come about Open Spaces — but for now check out its website to learn more.
