iPod Dance Party

In Noel Coward’s play Private Lives, a character famously remarks, “Extraordinary how potent cheap music is.” Get a real understanding of that line at an iPod battle. It’s like a breakdance or DJ battle but with far more crowd involvement. Two teams or competitors create a playlist of five songs each on their iPods, which they then surrender to a DJ with a mixer. The DJ plays a song from the first iPod and a song from the second, and the winning team is determined by the audience’s reaction. Simple, right? But the science of selecting a crowd-pleaser is not always so straightforward. Fickle listeners may crave a campy beat that’s just insistent enough to drive them off their sticky bar stools. Perhaps that late-’80s one-hit-wonder dance tune that’s chock-full of hipster irony will turn out the dance floor better than that cool new track by the Streets you downloaded yesterday. Maybe not.
