Incoming: Red Green at the Uptown, July 31

This is, quite honestly, the furthest I’ve ever had to stretch to post something on Wayward Blog. However, I’m such a fan of the performer and the cause which the performance benefits that I have to share this with everyone.

Since my wife and I have a kid who’s still in elementary school, we’re usually home on Saturday nights, barring any sort of awesomeness that can get us out and about. Our eldest is in a billion activities at his high school, so we usually give him free reign on the weekends, since he’s stuck at home most weeknights. Because of this, we’ve become a fan of various public broadcasting options — namely, Kansas Public Radio’s “Retro Cocktail Hour” and KCUR’s “Fish Fry,” along with whatever station on which we choose to listen to “A Prairie Home Companion.”

After all that radio, though, we just kinda want to veg in front of the tv. There’s not much available on Saturday nights…with one exception. That exception is The Red Green Show, which airs at 9:30 p.m on KCPT and 10:00 p.m. on KTWU out of Topeka. “A broad satire of how-to programs” and “family comedy show about escaping from the pressures of urban living,” the show ran for 16 seasons. It’s Canadian, and thus, weird (think SCTV crossed with This Old House).

Well, KCPT’s pledge drive will give you a chance to see Steve Smith, star of the show, in a one -man performance, “The Wit and Wisdom of Red Green” at the Uptown on Saturday, July 31. Smith will be on KCPT tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. live (via Skype) for a special broadcast, during which you can pledge, and receive (among other things) tickets to the Uptown show. They’ll run you $50, and if you’re impatient, just click here (there’s also the option of a meet and greet!). The people watching alone ought to be worth half that.

Watch a couple videos from the show after the jump.
