Hurricane Benefit Concerts

A wave of support has hit the victims of Hurricane Katrina in recent weeks that’s nearly as strong as the queen bitch herself was. Hell, even the government of Iraq has sent money. (Thanks, guys, and about that occupation thing … um … so how ’bout that soccer team of yours?) Naturally, generous area musicians have signed up in herds to play benefit shows, where we can give a donation, get hammered, rock out and celebrate New Orleans and the Gulf Coast in true Kansas City fashion. Here’s a rundown of what we’d heard about as of press time. Thursday at the Bottleneck there’s a benefit show, but we don’t know who’s playing. Who cares? We like the Bottleneck! Friday, head to the Main Street Café for an all-ages show with the aptly named A Delicate Disaster, plus Dropjaw, Weatherby and MC Reach. Also that night, the Brick hosts not only a heavyweight lineup of bands like Doris Henson, Federation of Horsepower, the String and Return (pictured) and the Golden Hearted Whores but also a charity auction for putting pies in local celebrities’ faces. If you have no desire to cream your favorite high-profile douchebag in the mug, head over to Knuckleheads, where, on Saturday night, jazz, blues, folk and zydeco musicians raise the roof for the drowned South. Sunday, the Nawlins-loving roots jam continues at B.B.’s Lawnside Bar-B-Q But if you miss those shows, chances are good that any music venue you decide to hit will be collecting donations.
