How Many Trombones?
River City, Iowa, the fictional setting of The Music Man, was modeled after Mason City, Iowa, the boyhood home of the musical’s author, Meredith Wilson. Anyone who has been there can tell you that the winters are cold, but the the people of the solidly Midwestern town are heartfelt. It’s the sort of place where one could believably set a story about hustlers swindling small-town residents, and where hooligans are transformed into model citizens by trumpets and clarinets (read: band nerds). The Kansas City Symphony performs the music of The Music Man (you’ll have to sing along if you want to hear the words). Though it’s a few trombones shy of 76, the symphony has rows and rows of virtuosos. The concert begins at 8 p.m. at the Church of the Resurrection (13720 Roe, in Leawood).
