How About Them Apples?

Jazz in the heart of Manhattan? Of course. That’s like asking if there are bagels in Brooklyn or penthouses on Park Avenue. But what about jazz in the heart of Manhattan, Kansas? Thanks to the Little Apple Jazz Festival, an event that’s been sponsored by the K-State Union Program Council for the past eight years, sizzling cymbals, bounding bass lines and hot horns will be returning to the Manhattan City Park (North 11th Street and Leavenworth) for some post-Independence Day musical pyrotechnics. With a lineup rich in local and homegrown artists, including Latin jazz kings El Mambo Orquestra, jazz-funk guitarist Kelly McCarty, Dixieland purveyors the New Red Onion Jazz Babies and singer Lisa Henry, the Little Apple offers a juicy bite of Big Apple-quality talent. The festival lasts from 4 to 10:30 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call 785-532-7326 or see k-state.edu/upc/jazzfest.htm.
