HIGH SOCIETY AND INSOBRIETY

Uptight socialite Tracy Lord (Katharine Hepburn) divorced C.K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant) because, he says, she didn’t understand his “deep and gorgeous thirst.” But the weekend of her impending marriage to stodgy buzzkill George Kittredge finds Tracy knocked for a loop — both by drink and by a love rectangle that includes her ex, her betrothed, and the reporter dispatched to cover the wedding (Oscar winner James Stewart). Previously labeled “box-office poison,” Hepburn produced the antidote with one of the all-time great romantic comedies, 1940’s The Philadelphia Story, which screens at 1 p.m. at Tivoli Cinemas (4050 Pennsylvania, 913-383-7756). Co-presented by UMKC’s Department of Communication Studies, the series “Leading Ladies of the Silver Screen” continues Saturdays and Sundays through June 6, spotlighting Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo, Bette Davis, Ingrid Bergman and Greer Garson. Admission to all screenings costs $4 (free with valid UMKC ID). For details, see tivolikc.com.
