HER by Georgina Herrera: KCFW Q&A

Now a veteran of Kansas City Fashion Week, Georgina Herrera’s line HER will have jewelry designs walk the runway on this season’s final show on Saturday. Herrera grew up deeply involved in the jewelry industry. Her family owned a jewelry manufacturing business in Mexico, but it wasn’t the career she envisioned for herself. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in industrial psychology, a Master’s in international relations, and moving to Kansas City in 2006, she started her own brand and opened up her first company. We talked to Herrera before her big show on Saturday.

You were brought up around jewelry and jewelry making. Do you draw any influences from your past into your current work?

As my slogan says, “Fashion, passion, love and tradition.” My jewelry is inspired on the woman of today, and my design is the fusion of my Mexican traditions, my indigenous roots, my love for art, and my passion to create something beautiful for people enjoy. “The connection between love, art and tradition is unbreakable and determines who we are.”

What brought you to Kansas City?

My husband’s job. At that time my husband and I believed that it would be a good opportunity for our family to move to Kansas and have our kids grow up here, and we don’t regret that decision at all. We are very happy! People in Kansas are really nice and supportive. We have become American citizens and we love being a part of this great community. Of course we miss home. Our whole family is in Mexico, and that is not easy, but is part of our life and we always try to stay focused on the good things.

What made you decide to get into jewelry making after your education in a differently field?

I grew up in the Jewelry world. My family manufactures and designs fine jewelry, so I grew up looking and admiring their work every day. I have a degree in Psychology and Masters in International Business, and I have taken that knowledge to turn my designs into a business.

What’s your favorite medium to work in?

I design and manufacture fine jewelry in sterling silver, gold, gemstones, and crystals. Mexico is the number one producer of high quality, sterling silver in the world. That gives me the confidence that everything that I offer to my customers will be a good quality. My intention is to create a unique brand of jewelry that everyone can wear and afford. Good quality and design at affordable price.

You closed out last season’s show with a stunning performance, what can attendees expect to see this season at KCFW?

What I can tell you is that last season was incredible! I envisioned the collection months before I was able to create it, and being able to close KCFW with that collection and fabulous group of models was a dream come true. This season will not be any less spectacular. I have the privilege to open the show on Saturday night. My new collection is unique, sexy, and strong, and you will be able to feel that on the runway. This collection really showcases my growth as a designer becoming more mature, confident, and strong. You can expect to see fun colors, layers, big earrings, lots of gold and a few hints of silver. I can’t wait for you to see it!

What do you have planned next for HER?

HER is planning to grow nationally and Internationally. I am currently working on bringing the collection to different marketings including Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, and Paris!
