Known for their smooth sound and captivating chemistry, Acute Inflections, a jazzy R&B duo from New York City, will be paying the Paris of the Plains a visit on Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. Recognized from their HBO and Amazon performances, the duo has enthralled audiences all over the country with an innovative blend of contemporary sophistication and historic soul. Their upcoming Kansas City show takes inspiration from the Harlem Renaissance, an evening celebrating vintage style and modern flair.

The Soulful Sounds performance will occur at the beautifully restored Gem Theater in the heart of the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District.

With sharp banter, sultry duets, and onstage chemistry, Acute Inflections invite audiences to step into a Roaring Twenties revival that will resonate with fans of Erykah Badu and Billie Holiday. Before their Kansas City performance, The Pitch spoke with the charismatic duo to learn about their sound, philosophy, and passion for music education. Acute Inflections holds jazz in high esteem, but maintains a playful, accessible approach.

“Jazz has gotten very serious. It wasn’t like that at the time—it was free, improvisational, and alive. We want to bring that back,” says bassist Sadiki Pierre. “We’re trying to stay true to that spirit of jazz—not reenacting what’s been done, but continuing what they started by putting our own flavor on it.”

Their authenticity carries over to the stage, as the duo’s natural chemistry and humor create a sense of ease that instantly draws audiences in. Their performances feel spontaneously devised with small moments that immerse the audience in something personal and unscripted. Every song develops with humor and tenderness, demonstrating the sincere bond that motivates their music.

“What you see on stage is literally how we are at home,” says vocalist Elasea Douglas. “That authenticity is what people connect with. They can always tell when something feels artificial.” Pierre adds, “Our shows might look formal, but it’s really a lighthearted, playful experience. People come in expecting sophistication and leave surprised by how relaxed and fun it was.”

It is particularly poignant that they are bringing their Harlem Renaissance-inspired show to Kansas City. The Gem Theatre allows them to share their contemporary sound while preserving the history of jazz, echoing why it’s vital to protect the heart of the genre through honoring the artists who built its foundation.

“It’s exciting to perform at the Gem Theatre,” Douglas says. “To unite those worlds and add our energy to such a historic space that meant a lot to the Black community.” The venue’s history in the 18th & Vine Jazz District aligns perfectly with the duo’s mission to honor jazz’s origins while keeping it accessible and evolving for new generations.

Acute Inflections also aims to make a tangible difference through their performances. A portion of the proceeds from the Kansas City show supports the Renaissance Youth Center, which equips South Bronx youth with practical skills in production, performance, and music.

“We’re byproducts of music education ourselves,” Douglas says. “The Renaissance Youth Center is changing the narrative in the South Bronx, turning a place expected to produce failure into one that breeds excellence.” Programs like this give children access to creative chances they might not otherwise have, helping them build technical skills, confidence, teamwork, and a sense that anything is possible.

“Programs like this are doing the real work,” Douglas adds. “Especially with all the changes in funding, we want to bring awareness and keep them going, because we have the power, so why not?” Supporting youth arts initiatives allows creatives to give back to the communities that shaped them, ultimately ensuring that the next generation of performers receives adequate guidance and opportunities.

Kansas City audiences can expect an evening that surprises and delights, with swinging music, captivating stories, and an intimate and energetic performance. Acute Inflections’ unique blend of talent, warmth, and humor makes for a night to remember for seasoned jazz fans and newcomers alike.

Acute Inflections is set to take over the Gem Theater on Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. with tickets starting at $30.
