Happy Birthday, Funky Town

Remember that hot-pink spandex miniskirt you wore to your hipster friend’s ironic ’80s affair? Or the faux-snakeskin fedora you found and just had to take home? It’s time to dig out those garish, glittery clothes you never thought you’d wear again, because you officially have a place to go. Funky Town (8300 East Blue Parkway) is equal parts neon, retro kitsch and carwash, still the same party palace after 15 years. Tricked out with brushes from an old-school drive-thru carwash, the huge dance floor glistens with bubbles that float ethereally down from the ceiling. The balcony entrance is known as the “stairway to heaven,” and there are black-lit dancing cages, of course. There is no doubt about this town’s ability to bring the funk, as well as some of KC’s most hilariously wild dance parties. Call 816-737-3865 to reserve a table for this libertine, cover-free crystal-anniversary celebration.
