Ground Art

After about age 12, life presents few opportunities to use chalk. Exceptions: schoolteachers at blackboards and college students using campus sidewalks as an advertising medium to draw crowds to weekend parties.Organizers of Mosaic Brain, a nonprofit arm of the Historic Northeast Cultural Arts Commission, hope to draw all sorts of crowds from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Sunday at Concourse Park (Benton Boulevard and St. John Avenue) for the Chalk Walk drawing festival. Adults and children, artists and scribblers alike, can transform sidewalks into magnum opuses and liven the historic park in the city’s northeast neighborhood. At least until it rains.Chalk Walk is free and open to everyone. It requires planning from artists; organizers want sketches or descriptions of the work beforehand. See chalkwalk.org for information and to download an application, or call 816-810-8991.
