Greensky Bluegrass is known for their progressive blends of traditional bluegrass sounds, with elements of folk and psychedelic rock. Their innovative approach to the genre pushes the boundaries through adventurous and electrifying infusions. Their forward-thinking musicianship is a refreshing take on bluegrass, appealing to both traditionalists and contemporary audiences alike.

By request, they kicked off their summer tour in Kansas City Thursday night. After the first few songs, Anders Beck on the dobro noted that, even though he doesn’t believe in omens, tonight was an omen indicating it was going to be a great summer tour for the band. The boys bantered with one another and in passing mandolinist Paul Hoffman blurted out, “Success leads to more success,” and Anders retorted, “Don’t try too hard” at becoming successful, it will come. They were essentially hosting a makeshift hype session in between jams. Such sweet boys.

As I was minding everyone’s business but my own, I noticed how intently banjoist Mike Bont was studying the crowd. Seemingly not just for curiosity’s sake, but to hone in on the energy, to connect, and nonverbally interact with the band’s followers, known as Campers. The look in his eye was similar to that of how a proud dad watches his children play. As the band flawlessly executed each note, wailed into the mics, and acknowledged us, they were also multitasking by nonverbally communicating with one another.

During our interview last week, Hoffman explained that the band practices jams, but it’s rarely the exact same on stage stating, “it’s all practice.” The beat, jam, and sound can and will change at any time. Having a strong bond is key to successfully transitioning within everchanging jams. The bonds between bandmates in Greensky Bluegrass run deep, forged through countless hours of rehearsal, touring, and performing together, since their formation 24 years ago. Greensky Bluesgrass sets the bar for talent, passion, effective collaboration, adaptability, and of course: Success.
