GoFundMe established for victims of apparent hate crime in Olathe Wednesday night

What appears to be a racially motivated hate crime left one man dead and two injured in Olathe last night. According to The Kansas City Star, a 51-year-old Navy veteran named Adam Purinton uttered racial slurs inside Austin’s Bar and Grill on Wednesday. Purinton, who is white, then left the bar and returned later with a gun. He allegedly said, “Get out of my country,” and opened fire on two Indian men, Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani.
Kuchibhotla was killed. Madasani is reportedly in critical condition. Another man, Ian Grillot, was also injured in the shooting.
Purinton then fled the scene and ended up at an Applebee’s in Clinton, Missouri. There, according to the Star, he told the bartender that he had killed “two Middle Eastern men.” He has since been booked into the Henry County jail. Charges have not yet been filed, though the Olathe Police Department will hold a press conference today at 4 p.m.
Kuchibhotla and Madasani were engineers at Garmin International, which is headquartered near Austin’s Bar and Grill. They were on the Aviations Systems Engineering team.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established for Kuchibhotla’s family. It indicates that the money will be partially put toward the “very expensive process of carrying his mortal remains back to India, so his parents can say goodbye one last time to their beloved son.”
GoFundMes for Madasani and Grillot are also up. You can donate to those here and here.
