Go, Artists!

Lemonade, crunchy ice! Beat ’em once, beat ’em twice! The Urban Culture Project points its big foam No. 1 finger with You’re Such a Good Sport, a group exhibition project engaged with competition, regional identification, and the correspondences between art and sports. Of which there are many: Both fields involve spectators as active participants and both showcase human achievement. Also, the Heisman trophy? Totally a sculpture. The Paragraph Gallery (23 East 12th Street) presents photos, drawings, video works and collage by artists including Megan Mantia, Pellom McDaniels, Shelley Buffalo and others. The opening (from 6 to 9 p.m.) includes appearances by fringe-dwelling cheerleading squad Rah Booty and the Kansas City Roller Warriors, Kansas City’s only national-champion sports team. Throughout March and April, the adjacent Urban Culture Project Space hosts The Training Room, a series of short-term projects that includes an interactive talk by artist Sean Starowitz about football play making, artist Johnny Naugahyde tying trout flies, and Paul Shortt leading a game called “Calvin Ball” that invites participants to add their own rules. Thursdays-Saturdays, 12-5 p.m. Starts: March 19. Continues through May 6, 2010
